Can I land my helicopter at my cottage?

Do you own your own helicopter and would like to land your machine in your yard? Can you land anywhere with a helicopter?

Here’s what I found out after doing some research for my client. It’s not easy to find the perfect place to land your helicopter, but it is possible. The main idea is not to disturb the neighbours.

A helicopter does not have to land in a specific area such as a heliport or an airport. With a land area of at least 200,000 sq ft (4.5 acres) seems to be a logical minimum area to build a safe landing area, and ideally build a hangar.  Keep in mind that many municipalities impose a maximum percentage of clearing per lot, so the help of a surveyor would be a good idea to make the right calculations.

I have observed that many developers who sell land have already placed restrictions on helicopters in their projects to ensure the peace of mind of their residents. So, it is important to be well informed and to mention your intentions before buying land.

Here are some important things to note when looking for the perfect cottage with a helicopter:

– Do not fly over another property at low altitude and respect the neighbours.

– There is no minimum distance to respect, as long as it is safe, and nothing can fly around.

– Large enough space to land and take off easily, away from tall trees and power lines.

– Some owners will land on a purpose-built dock by a lake, but beware that it is very visible and disturbing to the neighbours.

My client and I are actively looking for a lot large enough to build his cottage as well as his dream of landing at his home every weekend.

With a little patience and a lot of respect for the surroundings and the environment, I am sure we will find the right lot. In fact, we are getting close to our goal. To be continued…
